My cat Vincent is terrified of ceiling fans. He totally freaked out
when I first moved in and saw this huge spinny-thing on the ceiling.
He'd slink around the edge of the room to by-pass it staring wide-eyed
at it the whole time.
It's been 9 months now and he still is not happy with it though he will sleep in the same room with it now. He prefers it on as opposed to not spinning. But still, every creak, backfire, thump or bang, he blames it on the ceiling fan. Cowers and glares wide eyed at it till he's sure it's not coming down to get him. He occasionally sits and yowls at it in the middle of the night for no reason.
I researched it and it's a common problem but mostly cat-tales of different cat's reactions but no clear cut answer as to why. Except for one. It's possible Vincent (on an instinctive level) associates it with a predatory bird like a Hawk or Falcon and dark colored fans trigger it. White fans against a white ceiling are less intimidating.
It's possible that I may have to take my fan down and paint it white to see if that helps. Maybe then he won't have to live in fear of it coming down to eat him.
