But to actually sit down and watch it gave me goose bumps. Seriously! One thing is for certain, the more X-files changes, the more it remains the same and that's great!
Fox Mulder's sister disappeared when he was 12, leading to his obsession with aliens, Mulder himself tells us via voice-over. That's how he ended up at the FBI, where he investigated all sorts of weird cases known as the X-Files. In 1993, the FBI brought Agent/Dr. Dana Scully in to debunk his crazier notions and pose for snuggly pictures, but he just became more of a believer. In 2002, Mulder and Scully's unit was closed by the FBI.
Then, Mulder starts running down stats on U.S. alien craft sightings, Roswell, etc. (You know all this. In all sci-fi shows it's aliens, not a weather baloon). Are alien spaceships landing on earth? Are we truly alone, or are we being lied to? As Mulder asks this, we see a flying saucer-looking thing crash-land, and a tiny sad alien hand slide down its window. Awww! Poor thing! And then we're in the same credits you remember from a thousand years ago. Mulder and Scully look like such kids in their ID photos!
Scully looks Mature and still hot! Mulder looks grizzled, like he just came off a 3 day drunk, but it's them! Not a re-cast which I feared and dreaded. Not their offspring walking in their elders shoes as seems to be a common plot with some re-makes. Wonderful to see. It's just the same...but different.
Tad O’Malley (Joel McHale), a radical right-wing TV host who has gotten rich off hyping conspiracy theories about how the government is coming to take everyone’s guns and impose martial law. His search for Mulder, and his years of experience and credibility in the field of conspiracy investigation, sets in motion the plot for the revival.
"I only want to believe. Actual proof has been strangely hard to come by."
- Fox Mulder, to Tad O'Malley -
He goes through FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), Scully and Mulder’s old boss, and Skinner then contacts Scully, now assisting in difficult children’s surgery at a hospital, to rouse Mulder from where he’s hiding. O’Malley thinks he’s onto something huge, and he’s willing to go public with his findings, but he wants Mulder on his side. Without much hesitation, the former agent agrees to a meeting, but he wants his old partner and former love interest Scully with him.
Then we have the other part os Scully's case, The Pretty Sveta whose pretty belly is marred with "Scoop Marks from 20 years of alien abductions! She revealed that she's a ghost from Scully's past, that he interviewed her as a little girl about being abducted by aliens.
The show reminds me somewhat of Steven Spielberg's epic mini-series "Taken" starring a young Dakota Fanning. (I prefer her older movies vs the newer ones, but that's another blog for another time)
About several generations of Alien Abductions from two families and their DNA was mixed with alien DNA and then the two families were mixed together. (perverted little Bastards, these aliens!) which is part of the plot of The New X-Files.
All in all it was the best thing on Fox since FRINGE.
Which kept me glued to the TV every week. Good sci-fi is so hard to find on TV these days!
I urge you to follow the Return Of The X-files and enjoy the ride with me!
